"Yesterday is already a dream,
And tomorrow is only a vision,
But today, well lived,
Makes every yesterday a dream of happiness,
And every tomorrow a vision of hope."

A journey of self discovery is a long and arduous process; Mine began aged 13 after leaving Portugal to head for England. What followed were days of music, dance and drama; disciplines that taught me about self expression... yet I needed more, and so my search began. I stopped dancing and stumbled into a gym yoga class, which was a disaster. Disappointed, but determined to find an alternative to dance, I once again pursued yoga. After 5 months, my interest in yoga deepened; I began to research the non physical aspect of yoga. Over the next 3 years, I noticed changes in myself as an individual. Yoga created an internal environment of tranquillity and calm. The daily practice taught me self discipline, concentration and focus. And it is through yoga that I have learnt to apply these benefits into my city lifestyle in London. Shortly after the discovery of my love for yoga, I decide to become a yoga teacher. I wanted to give others the opportunity to experience yoga and it's benefits as individuals; whether it be for physical exercise, or as a spiritual deepening. I trained in Thailand with my teacher, Paul Dallaghan, and shortly after trained as a pre-natal and post-natal yoga teacher with Colette Crawford in Seattle, USA. Since my training, I have continued and deepened my own practice, been teaching vinyasa style private and group classes, and one-on-one pre-natal classes. It is through my love of teaching yoga that I have decided to continue following this path far beyond

To me, yoga is an artistic expression of the self. The yoga I love to teach is a reflection of my soul and as a teacher I aim to use my intuition and self-confidence, to acknowledge and respects others as I learn to do with myself. My classes are an opportunity for me to share experiences and to sense ultimate truth and trust with my students. With dedication, I will lead my students into an experience which encourages them to search within their own individual souls, and to acquire forgiveness. Come with an open mind, let go of all expectations and I guarantee, you will learn something about yourself, be it on a physical, emotional or spiritual realm. I'll be looking forward to seeing you in my class!
Namaste,

Om Shanti, Shanti, Shanti
Om Peace, Peace, Peace

“Stay on the path of yoga and eventually the bad habits will give you up without you having to struggle to give them up”
Catharine O’neill
Catharine has been practising yoga since 1974 and apart from her very first classes in a church hall in St John’s wood, London, her yoga experience is almost entirely within the Iyengar system. She has travelled to India twice to the Iyengar centre in Pune to work with Mr Iyengar, his daughter and his son together with other senior teachers and has attended Iyengar seminars and courses both in the UK and at Quinta Mimosa in the Algarve and in Spain. She came to live in the Algarve in 1986. At the time there were no regular Iyengar classes and so, at the suggestion of one of her UK based senior teachers, she trained to become a teacher qualifying as an Introductory Teacher in 1982.

What she appreciates most about the Iyengar system is the attention to detail, grounding and alignment. The use of props (a particular feature of the Iyengar system) is also an invaluable help in creating openings in our body and mind awareness. The props are particularly helpful to those who are less able bodied because of stiffness, old injuries or passing years.

Catharine teaches regular classes on a Thursday in S, Bras and on Friday and Saturday at Lyra Beauty Salon (opposite Appolonia)

“The primary aim of yoga is to restore the mind to simplicity and peace, and free it from confusion and distress.....The practice of yoga fills up the reservoirs of hope and optimism within you. It helps you overcome all obstacles on the path to perfect health and spiritual contentment. It is a rebirth.” BKS Iyengar

Rachel Lovegrove

Rachel Lovegrove uses her 20 years of Iyengar yoga experience and skills as a teacher to provide courses to suit all levels of abilities and experience and has been providing yoga holidays and retreats since 2003. Her passion and enthusiasm for the practice of yoga and the life-enhancing benefits it gives us is what drives her to share with others.

She works with individuals from all walks of life at all levels of fitness and health: everyone from sports professionals to those recovering from illness or suffering from stress or depression or simply students wanting to bring a regular practice of yoga into their lives. Her dedication and devotion to helping her students through yoga is at the core of her work.

Rachel’s main influence in the early days was her mother who took her to her first class when she was just 14 years old. She remembers the feeling of peace and quiet in a room full of normally very stressed and tense mothers and housewives – here they were stretching and relaxing – most unusual! It wasn’t until much later, in her early 20’s that she began regular classes. She was very lucky to find, by chance an amazing Iyengar Yoga teacher in Winchester called Julie. A new student to yoga, Rachel didn’t know about all the different styles that were available, but as soon as she found the Iyengar method, she was hooked.

Iyengar Yoga Training

The attention to detail, the discipline, the physical posture work combined with philosophy, compassion, learning and understanding was everything the Rachel was looking for in a spiritual practice. Through Julie’s influence and generosity, Rachel was encouraged to work hard and eventually went on to train as a teacher of Iyengar yoga. She was incredibly lucky to meet Mr BKS Iyengar in 1993 and to attend classes with some of the most senior teachers in the UK such as Sylvia Prescott, Mira Mehta (author of Yoga, The Iyengar Way), Penny Chaplin, Judi Sweeting, Sasha Perryman, Cathy Rogers-Evans and Judi Soffa. It was while on a yoga holiday to Portugal with Cathy and Judi Soffa that Rachel realised for certain that she wanted to become a teacher.

The training in Iyengar Yoga for teachers is thorough, it is student-centered and once qualified, teachers have to maintain professional standards through contact with senior teachers, attending study days, regular classes and workshops so that students can benefit. Various levels of certification are attainable but only through years of study and practice – there are no fast-track options in Iyengar Yoga teaching!

Rachel qualified in 2000 and has now attained Junior Intermediate Level II which means she has been examined as having the necessary skills and knowledge to teach intermediate postures and help those students who may have serious medical conditions. She continues to study and keep in contact with senior teachers to maintain her skills and knowledge and in 2006 was delighted to spend a month with the Iyengar family in Pune, studying with Geeta, Prashant and Guruji.

Iyengar Teachers Certification Mark

Only fully qualified teachers in the Iyengar method who have been examined by the Iyengar Yoga Association can use the term Iyengar in their teaching qualifications and bear the Iyengar Certification Mark.
